ἐγὼ δὲ προελθὼν ὀλίγον ἀπὸ τῆς θαλάσσης εὗρον τὸ σπήλαιον τοιοῦτον οἷον Ὅμηρος εἶπεν, καὶ αὐτὴν ταλασιουργοῦσαν. ὡς δὲ τὴν ἐπιστολὴν ἔλαβεν καὶ ἐπελέξατο, πρῶτα μὲν ἐπὶ πολὺ ἐδάκρυεν, ἔπειτα δὲ παρεκάλει ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ ξένια καὶ εἱστία λαμπρῶς καὶ περὶ τοῦ Ὀδυσσέως ἐπυνθάνετο καὶ περὶ τῆς Πηνελόπης, ὁποία τε εἴη τὴν ὄψιν καὶ εἰ σωφρονοίη, καθάπερ Ὀδυσσεὺς πάλαι περὶ αὐτῆς ἐκόμπαζεν· καὶ ἡμεῖς τοιαῦτα ἀπεκρινάμεθα, ἐξ ὧν εἰκάζομεν εὐφρανεῖσθαι αὐτήν.

      Τότε μὲν οὖν ἀπελθόντες ἐπὶ ναῦν πλησίον ἐπὶ τῆς ᾐόνος ἐκοιμήθημεν. 

    προελθὼν: ao. part. of προ-ἔρχομαι, “having proceeded”

    εὗρον (= ηὗρον): ao. of εὑρίσκω, “I found”

    τοιοῦτον οἷον Ὅμηρος εἶπεν: “just as Homer said”

    ταλασιουργοῦσαν: pr. part. acc. s. f. of ταλασιουργέω, “working wool”

    ὡς ἔλαβεν: ao. of λαμβάνω, “when she took and read...”

    ἐπελέξατο: ao. of ἐπιλέγω

    παρεκάλει: impf. of παρα-καλέω, “she summoned”

    ὁποία τε εἴη καὶ εἰ σωφρονοίη: pr. optatives, ind. quest. after ἐπυνθάνετο, “what she was like and whether she was prudent”

    εὐφρανεῖσθαι: pr. inf. after εἰκάζομεν, “we supposed would please her”
