Μείνας δὲ κἀκείνην τὴν ἡμέραν, τῇ ἐπιούσῃ ἀνηγόμην τῶν ἡρώων παραπεμπόντων. ἔνθα μοι καὶ Ὀδυσσεὺς προσελθὼν λάθρᾳ τῆς Πηνελόπης δίδωσιν ἐπιστολὴν εἰς Ὠγυγίαν τὴν νῆσον Καλυψοῖ κομίζειν. συνέπεμψε δέ μοι ὁ Ῥαδάμανθυς τὸν πορθμέα Ναύπλιον, ἵν᾽ ἐὰν καταχθῶμεν ἐς τὰς νήσους, μηδεὶς ἡμᾶς συλλάβῃ ἅτε κατ᾽ ἄλλην ἐμπορίαν καταπλέοντας.

      Ἐπεὶ δὲ τὸν εὐώδη ἀέρα προϊόντες παρεληλύθειμεν, αὐτίκα ἡμᾶς ὀσμή τε δεινὴ διεδέχετο οἷον ἀσφάλτου καὶ θείου καὶ πίττης ἅμα καιομένων, καὶ κνῖσα δὲ πονηρὰ καὶ ἀφόρητος ὥσπερ ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπων ὀπτωμένων, καὶ ὁ ἀὴρ ζοφερὸς καὶ ὁμιχλώδης, καὶ κατέσταζεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ δρόσος πιττίνη· ἠκούομεν δὲ καὶ μαστίγων ψόφον καὶ οἰμωγὴν ἀνθρώπων πολλῶν.

    εἰς Ὠγυγίαν: “to Ogygia,” the island of the nymph Calypso, where Odysseus was stranded for seven years (Odyssey 5)

    Ναύπλιον: Nauplion was the legendary navigator of the Argonauts.

    ἵνα μηδεὶς ἡμᾶς συλλάβῃ: subj. in neg. purpose clause, “lest someone arrest us”

    ἐὰν καταχθῶημεν: ao. pas. subj. of κατα-ἄγω, more vivid or general protasis, “if (ever) we land”

    ἅτε + part.: expressing the grounds for the action, “thinking that we were putting in”

    κατ᾽ ἄλλην ἐμπορίαν: “for some other errand”
