Τότε μὲν οὖν ἐπὶ πολὺ ἐδακρύομεν, ὕστερον δὲ ἀναστήσαντες τοὺς ἑταίρους τὴν μὲν ναῦν ὑπεστηρίξαμεν, αὐτοὶ δὲ τὰ πυρεῖα συντρίψαντες καὶ ἀνακαύσαντες δεῖπνον ἐκ τῶν παρόντων ἐποιούμεθα. παρέκειτο δὲ ἄφθονα καὶ παντοδαπὰ κρέα τῶν ἰχθύων, καὶ ὕδωρ ἔτι τὸ ἐκ τοῦ Ἑωσφόρου εἴχομεν. τῇ ἐπιούσῃ δὲ διαναστάντες, εἴ ποτε ἀναχάνοι τὸ κῆτος, ἑωρῶμεν ἄλλοτε μὲν ὄρη, ἄλλοτε δὲ μόνον τὸν οὐρανόν, πολλάκις δὲ καὶ νήσους· καὶ γὰρ ᾐσθανόμεθα φερομένου αὐτοῦ ὀξέως πρὸς πᾶν μέρος τῆς θαλάττης. ἐπεὶ δὲ ἤδη ἐθάδες τῇ διατριβῇ ἐγενόμεθα, λαβὼν ἑπτὰ τῶν ἑταίρων ἐβάδιζον ἐς τὴν ὕλην περισκοπήσασθαι τὰ πάντα βουλόμενος. οὔπω δὲ πέντε ὅλους διελθὼν σταδίους εὗρον ἱερὸν Ποσειδῶνος, ὡς ἐδήλου ἡ ἐπιγραφή, καὶ μετ᾽ οὐ πολὺ καὶ τάφους πολλοὺς καὶ στήλας ἐπ᾽ αὐτῶν πλησίον τε πηγὴν ὕδατος διαυγοῦς, ἔτι δὲ καὶ κυνὸς ὑλακὴν ἠκούομεν καὶ καπνὸς ἐφαίνετο πόρρωθεν καί τινα καὶ ἔπαυλιν εἰκάζομεν.

ἐπὶ πολύ: "for a long time."

ἀναστήσαντες: aor. part. act. of ἀνίστημι, "raising up (our comrades)."

ὑπεστηρίξαμεν: aor. 1 pl. of ὑποστηρίζω, "we shored up."

συντρίψαντες: aor. part. of συντρίβω, "having rubbed together."

εἴχομεν: impf. of ἔχω, "we had."

τῇ ἐπιούσῃ (sc. ἡμέρᾳ):  "on the next day," (G. 527c; S. 1540).

διαναστάντες: aor. part. intrans. of διανίστημι, "arising."

εἴ ποτε ἀναχάνοι: "if ever (the sea-monster) opened its mouth" (S. 2340). Jerram ad loc. suggests that the optative denotes frequency (cf. G. 651).

ἑωρῶμεν: impf. "we saw."

ᾐσθανόμεθα: impf. of αἰσθάνομαι, "we perceived (+ gen.)."

φερομένου: pres. mid. part., "moving" (lit. "carrying itself)."

ἕπτα τῶν ἑταίρων: "seven of my comrades" (S. 1317).

περισκοπήσασθαι: aor. mid. infin. of περισκοπέω, "to investigate."

διελθών: aor. part. of διέρχομαι, "having gone through."

εὗρον (=ηὗρον): aor. of εὑρίσκω, "I found."

καὶ μετ᾿οὐ πολύ: "and not far away" (lit. "and after not much space") (S. 1189). The phrase could also be temporal and mean "and not much later."

καί τινα καὶ ἔπαυλιν εἰκάζομεν: "and we conjectured (that there was) some farmhouse too."
