The March to Jerusalem

[10.30.2]  Postquam vērō haec omnia facta sunt, congregātī omnēs nostrī māiōrēs ōrdināvērunt concilium, quemadmodum hunc fēlīciter valērent condūcere et regere populum, dōnec peragerent iter Sānctī Sepulchrī, prō quō hūc usque multa erant passī perīcula. Inventum est in conciliō quia nōndum audērent intrāre in pāgānōrum terram, eō quod valdē in aestīvō tempore est ārida et inaquōsa; ideōque accēpērunt terminum attendendum ad kalendās Novembris. Dēnique dīvīsī sunt seniōrēs, et ūnusquisque prōfectus est in terram suam, dōnec esset prope terminus eundī. Fēcēruntque prīncipēs praecōnārī per urbem ūniversam, ut sī forte aliquis egēns illīc adesset et aurō argentōque carēret, conventiōne factā cum illīs remanēre sī vellet, ab eīs cum gaudiō retentus esset.

(July 1098)  The leaders decide to wait till November before marching south to Jerusalem, and disperse until that time. They announce that they will gladly take into their service any poor crusader willing to stay on.

 

quemadmodum ... populum: = quemadmodum valērent valērent condūcere et regere hunc populum. The populus is the mass of crusaders.

hūc usque: "up to this point, thus far."

eō quod: "the reason being that," "because."

in aestīvō tempore est ārida et inaquōsa: the subject is terra paganorum.

dīvīsī sunt seniōrēs: the seniōres are apparently identical to nostrī maiōrēs at the beginning of the passage.

in terram suam: each leader apparently had taken control of some territory in the region; they are not returning home to Europe.

Fēcēruntque prīncipēs praecōnārī: "the leaders had it announced"; see OLD facio 15.

conventiōne ... vellet: = sī vellet, conventiōne factā, (cum) illīs (seniōribus) remanēre. A poor man would be allowed to take service with one of the leaders, presumably after swearing an oath of fealty (conventiōne factā).

ab eīs cum gaudiō retentus esset: "he would glady be kept by them (the leaders)."

egeō egēre eguī egitūrus: to be needy, to be in want

careō (2): to be without

retineō retinēre retinuī retentum: to hold back, retain
