ἡμεῖς δὲ ἐν τοσούτῳ ἐπάραντες τὴν ὀθόνην ἐφεύγομεν ἀπολιπόντες αὐτοὺς μαχομένους, καὶ δῆλοι ἦσαν κρατήσοντες οἱ Καρυοναῦται ἅτε καὶ πλείους - πέντε γὰρ εἶχον πληρώματα - καὶ ἀπὸ ἰσχυροτέρων νεῶν μαχόμενοι· τὰ γὰρ πλοῖα ἦν αὐτοῖς κελύφη καρύων ἡμίτομα, κεκενωμένα, μέγεθος δὲ ἑκάστου ἡμιτομίου εἰς μῆκος ὀργυιαὶ πεντεκαίδεκα.

      Ἐπεὶ δὲ ἀπεκρύψαμεν αὐτούς, ἰώμεθα τοὺς τραυματίας, καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν ἐν τοῖς ὅπλοις ὡς ἐπίπαν ἦμεν, ἀεί τινας ἐπιβουλὰς προσδεχόμενοι· οὐ μάτην. 

ἐν τοσούτῳ (sc. χρόνῳ): “in the meantime”

ἐπάραντες: ao. part. of ἐπι-αἴρω, “having hoisted”

ἀπολιπόντες: ao.part. of ἀπο-λείπω, “having left behind”

δῆλοι ἦσαν: “they were clear(ly)” + part.

κρατήσοντες: fut. part. of κρατέω after  δῆλοι “about to defeat”

ἅτε + part.: providing the grounds for the supposition

ἅτε καὶ πλείους (sc. ὄντες)...καὶ μαχόμενοι: “because they were more numerous and were fighting”

κεκενωμένα: perf. part. of κενόω, “emptied out”

ἀπεκρύψαμεν: ao. of ἀπο-κρύπτω, “we had lost sight of them”

ἰώμεθα: impf. of ἰάομαι, “we cared for”

ὡς ἐπίπαν: “as much as possible”

προσδεχόμενοι: pr. part., “expecting”

ἐπαίρω: lift up and set on

ὀθόνη, ἡ: linen (used for sails)

ἀπολείπω: leave over or behind

πλήρωμα, -ατος, τό: a full measure, crew

πλοῖον, τό: a floating vessel, a ship, vessel 

κέλυφος, -εος, τό: pod, shell

κάρυον, τό: nut

ἡμίτομος, -ον: half cut through, cut in two

κενόω: empty out, drain

μῆκος, -εος, τό: length

ὄργυια, -ᾶς, ἡ: the length of the outstretched arms

πεντεκαίδεκα: fifteen

ἀποκρύπτω: hide from, keep hidden from

ἰάομαι: heal, cure

τραυματίης, -ου, ὁ: a wounded man

ἐπίπαν: in general

ἐπιβουλή, ἡ: a plan against, attack

προσδέχομαι: receive, accept

μάτην: in vain, idly, fruitlessly
