Caeneus and Centaurs, Lycian Sarchophagus of Sidon

A nude youth lies on the ground between to rearing centaurs. He is visible from torso up, trying to protect himself with a shield strapped to his left arm. The right-hand centaur is broken off at the shoulders. The left-hand centaur holds a pithos over his head with both hands preparing to swing it down on the head of the youth.

End panel of the so-called Lycian Sarcophagus excavated from the royal necropolis in Sidon in 1887. It possibly depicts Caeneus being beaten into the ground by centaurs.
