Notes
1: ποικιλόθρον’: vocative. A variant in the manuscripts reads ποικιλόφρον’, “many-minded,” though ποικιλόθρον’ appears to be the commoner of the two readings. See Winkler 1990, 166-76.
3: μή: “don’t,” with δάμνα, negative imperative. μ’ = με, acc. > ἐγώ. ὀνίαισι > ὀνία = ἀνία, “grief, sorrow, distress, trouble.” Dative of means. δάμνα: 2nd sg. imperative > δαμνάω = δαμάζω, “overpower, subdue, lay low.”
4: θῦμον: = θυμόν, acc. of respect, “in my heart.”
5: ἔλθ’: ἔλθε, 2nd sg. aor. imperative > ἔρχομαι. αἴ: Aeol. for εἰ. ποτα = ποτε. κἀτέρωτα = καὶ ἀτέρωτα, “and at some other time,” i.e., “in the past.” ἀτέρωτα is not, as LSJ and others have it, the Aeolic form of ἐτέρωθι (“elsewhere”), but of ἐτέρωτε, a temporal adverb with the suffix -τε (Page 1955).
6: ἀίοισα: > ἀίω, “hearing, paying attention to,” nom. sg. fem. pres. act. partic. πήλοι = τηλοῦ, “from afar.”
λίποισα: > λείπω, nom. sg. fem. aor. act. ptc.
ἦλθες: > ἔρχομαι, 2nd sg. aor. indic.
γᾶς: = γῆς, gen. sg.
πύκνα: with πτέρ’, “fast-beating”
ὠράνωἴθερος = ὠράνω αἴθερος, which elide and scan as one long syllable (-ωἴ-); ὠράνω = οὐρανοῦ, gen. sg. of οὐρανός heaven; αἴθερος is gen. sg. of αἰθήρ, ether, heaven, air.
ὄττι = ὅ τι “what,” “why” (introduces an indirect question)
δηὖτε: = δὴ αὖτε, “yet again,” “this time”
πέπονθα: > πάσχω 1st sg. perf. act. indic.
κὤττι: = καὶ ὅ τι, “and why?”
κάλημι: = καλέω, 1st sg. pres.
μοι: take with γένεσθαι, "to happen for myself"
θύμῳ: dat. of place where
ἄγην = ἄγειν, pres. infin. of ἄγω
ἐς = είς
