Amazon on a Rim Fragment of a Rhyton

Preserved are the torso and head of an Amazon (right) on horseback in left profile. The horse's head and front shoulder (center) are preserved. Its eye is rolled back toward its rider as if in fear or panic. The Amazon carries a shield on her left arm, only about the upper two-thirds preserved. There also appears to be the shaft of a spear at waist-height, though it is unclear whether she is carrying it or it is being thrust at her. She is wearing a polka-dotted garment layered over a short chiton.
    Annotations
