28.11 Forming the Second Aorist
SECOND AORIST verbs do not add the –σα marker to the verb stem. There are, however, two types of SECOND AORISTS:
- Thematic
- Athematic
THEMATIC SECOND AORISTS are the most common second aorists, and are particularly common with:
- thematic verbs with distinct "present tense" and verb stems, such as λείπ-ω
- stem: λιπ-
- thematic verbs with a verb stem that ends in a consonant
As with the imperfect, they use thematic secondary endings:
As always, we start with the verb stem:
- λαβ take
To the beginning of the verb stem we add an augment (ἐ):
- ἐλαβ take
To this stem we now add our thematic secondary endings. Note that the ending for the THEMATIC SECOND AORIST INFINITIVE is -ειν.
