ἡμέραν οὖν καὶ νύκτα οὐρίῳ πλέοντες ἔτι τῆς γῆς ὑποφαινομένης οὐ σφόδρα βιαίως ἀνηγόμεθα, τῆς ἐπιούσης δὲ ἅμα ἡλίῳ ἀνίσχοντι ὅ τε ἄνεμος ἐπεδίδου καὶ τὸ κῦμα ηὐξάνετο καὶ ζόφος ἐπεγίνετο καὶ οὐκέτ᾽ οὐδὲ στεῖλαι τὴν ὀθόνην δυνατὸν ἦν. ἐπιτρέψαντες οὖν τῷ πνέοντι καὶ παραδόντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐχειμαζόμεθα ἡμέρας ἐννέα καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα, τῇ ὀγδοηκοστῇ δὲ ἄφνω ἐκλάμψαντος ἡλίου καθορῶμεν οὐ πόρρω νῆσον ὑψηλὴν καὶ δασεῖαν, οὐ τραχεῖ περιηχουμένην τῷ κύματι· καὶ γὰρ ἤδη τὸ πολὺ τῆς ζάλης κατεπαύετο. Προσσχόντες οὖν καὶ ἀποβάντες ὡς ἂν ἐκ μακρᾶς ταλαιπωρίας πολὺν μὲν χρόνον ἐπὶ γῆς ἐκείμεθα, διαναστάντες δὲ ὅμως ἀπεκρίναμεν ἡμῶν αὐτῶν τριάκοντα μὲν φύλακας τῆς νεὼς παραμένειν, εἴκοσι δὲ σὺν ἐμοὶ ἀνελθεῖν ἐπὶ κατασκοπῇ τῶν ἐν τῇ νήσῳ.

ἡμέραν...νύκτα: acc. of extent of time (S. 1582; G. 538), a frequent construction in this section.

οὐρίῳ (sc. ἀνέμῳ): "with a tailwind," as above in 1.5.

ἔτι τῆς γῆς ὑποφαινομένης: "while the land was still visible" (S. 2058 and 2070; G. 589 and 590).

τῆς ἐπιούσης (sc. ἡμέρας): "in the course of the next day" (S. 1444).

ἡλίῳ ἀνίσχοντι: "at sunrise" (S. 1539 and 1540).

ἐπεδίδου: 3. sg. act. impf. of ἐπιδίδωμι, "the wind began increasing," inchoative imperfect (S. 1900), as is ηὐξάνετο later in the same sentence.

ἡμῶν αὐτῶν: The reflexive adjective is being used substantivally and goes with the numerals in the μέν and δέ clauses (partitive. gen. after numerals: S. 1317).

παραμένειν...ἀνελθεῖν: infinitives of purpose (S. 2009) dependent on ἀπεκρίναμεν, "we chose...thirty of our men to remain, twenty to go."
