28.1 εἰ μὲν τὸ σῶμά σού τις ἐπέτρεπε τῷ ἀπαντήσαντι, ἠγανάκτεις ἄν· ὅτι δὲ σὺ τὴν γνώμην τὴν σεαυτοῦ ἐπιτρέπεις τῷ τυχόντι, ἵνα, ἐὰν λοιδορήσηταί σοι, ταραχθῇ ἐκείνη καὶ συγχυθῇ, οὐκ αἰσχύνῃ τούτου ἕνεκα;

    Don't Entrust Your Mind to Just Anyone

    εἰ ἐπέτρεπε … ἠγανάκτεις ἄν: present contrary to fact condition (G. 649; S. 2292.1)

    τῷ ἀπαντήσαντι: “anyone you meet,” “any chance person”

    ὅτι ... συγχυθῇ: object clause after οὐκ αἰσχύνῃ τούτου ἕνεκα at the end of the sentence.

    τῷ τυχόντι: > τυγχάνω, aor. act. part. dat. masc. sg., “one who happens (to be present),” “anyone,” “all and sundry”

    λοιδορήσηται: > λοιδορέω, 3 sg. aor. mid. subj. in a present general condition (G. 650; S. 2295.1)

    ἐκείνη: refers back to γνώμην.

    ἵνα ... ταραχθῇ ... συγχυθῇ: ἵνα introduces a result clause (as in 12.2, see note). The verbs are 3 sg. aor. pass. subj.

    αἰσχύνῃ: > αἰσχύνω, 2 sg. pres. mid. ind.

    ἐπιτρέπω, ἐπιτρέψω, ἐπέτρεψα, to entrust + dat.

    ἀπαντάω, ἀπαντήσω, ἀπήντησα, to meet, encounter

    ἀγανακτέω, ἀγανακτήσω, to feel irritation, to be annoyed at + genitive; to be irritated or displeased

    λοιδορέω, λοιδορήσω, ἐλοιδόρησα, to insult, verbally abuse; reproach, rebuke

    ταράσσω, ταράξω, ἐτάραξα, to trouble, disturb

    συγχέω, confound, to confuse, trouble

    αἰσχύνω, αἰσχυνῶ, ᾔσχυνα, to dishonor, feel shame
