            <p><emph rend="bold">THE INNER OBJECT <lb/>
                536</emph> An Accusative of the <emph>Inner</emph> object (<emph>Cognate Accusative</emph>) is found with many verbs. It repeats the meaning of the verb in the form of a noun or pronoun.</p>
                <list><item><emph rend="bold">a.</emph> A noun, with a modifying word or clause (rarely omitted):<lb/>
                    <lb/>
                Στρατηγεῖν ταύτην τὴν στρατηγίᾱν <emph>to act as general in this campaign.</emph> AN. I. 3, I5. ἄλλην μὲν ἀρχὴν οὐδεμίαν πώποτε ἦρξα <emph>I never held any other magistracy.</emph> AP. 32 b. κινδῡνεύω τὸν ἔσχατον κίνδῦνον <emph>I am in the utmost danger.</emph> AP. 34 c. ξυνέφυγε τὴν φυγὴν ταύτην <emph>he shared the late exile.</emph> AP. 21 a. So δικάζειν δίκην τινά <emph>decide a suit,</emph> φεύγειν δίκην τινά <emph>be defendant in a suit, </emph>γράφεσθαι γραφήν τινα <emph>bring an indictment,</emph> θειν τὰ Λύκαια <emph>celebrate by sacrifice the Lykaia,</emph> etc.</item>
                    
                    <item><emph rend="bold">b.</emph> An adjective or pronoun in the neuter:<lb/>
                        <lb/>
                Ἔπαθόν τι τοιοῦτον <emph>I had some such experience as this.</emph> AP. 22 a. Μελήτῳ τούτων οὔτε μέγα οὔτε μῖκρὸν πώποτε ἐμέλησεν <emph>Miletos never cared either much or little about these matters.</emph> AP. 26 b. So τί χρήσεται τούτῳ; <emph>what use will he make of this?</emph> μέγα φρονεῖν <emph>be proud (think large),</emph> πάντα πεῦθεσθαι <emph>render all obedience,</emph> etc.</item>
                
                    <item><emph rend="bold">c.</emph> Some verbs take both a direct object and a cognate accusative:<lb/>
                        <lb/>
                        Ἡμᾶς τὰ αἴσχιστα αἰκισάμενος <emph>by inflicting on us the most shameful outrages.</emph> AN. III. 1, 18. ἕκαστον εὐεργετεῖν τὴν μεγίστην εὐεργεσίᾱν <emph>to confer on each the greatest benefaction.</emph> AP. 36 c. ἕτεροι δὲ πολλὰ κγαθὰ μᾶ ς εἰσιν εἰργασμένοι <emph>and others have done many good things to you.</emph> L. 16, 19.<lb/>
                        <lb/>
                        The <emph>inner </emph>object may stand also with the passive:<lb/>
                        <lb/>
                Tί ἀδικηθεὶς ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ νῦν ἐπιβουλεύεις μοι; <emph>what wrong did you receive from me, that you are now scheming against me?</emph> AN. I. 6, 8.</item>
                
                    <item><emph rend="bold">d.</emph> A few adjectives also take a cognate accusative:<lb/>
                        <lb/>
                Σοφὸς τὴν ἐκείνων σοφίᾱν, ἀμαθὴς τὴν ἀμαθίᾱν <emph>wise in their wisdom, ignorant with their ignorance.</emph> AP. 22 e.</item></list>
