      <p>
        With
        <foreign>
          <emph>sum</emph>
        </foreign>
        and a few other intransitive or passive verbs, a noun or an adjective
        <emph rend="ital">describing</emph>
        or
        <emph rend="ital">defining</emph>
        the subject may stand in the predicate. This is called a Predicate Noun or Adjective.
      </p>
      <p>
        The verb
        <foreign>
          <emph>sum</emph>
        </foreign>
        is especially common in this construction, and when so used is called the
        <emph rend="ital">
          <foreign>copula</foreign>
        </emph>
        (i.e. connective).
      </p>
      <p>
        Other verbs which take a predicate noun or adjective are the socalled
        <term>copulative verbs</term>
        signifying
        <emph rend="ital">to become, to be made, to be named</emph>
        ,
        <gloss>to appear</gloss>
        , and the like.
