56 After a consonant ι often causes changes. Thus:
- a. λι becomes λλ: ἄλλος, Latin alius.
- b. After ν or ρ, ι is transposed and contracts with the
stem vowel.
- c. κι, γι, or χι, sometimes τι, becomes σσ, later ττ.
- d. δι, sometimes γι (also γγι), becomes ζ.
